This week I’m spotlighting another great resource for folks who live near Greenwood, Georgetown, Milton, Lewes, Long Neck, Frankford, Roxana and Millsboro. Like Village Volunteers, the CHEER organization fosters independence for those who are age 50 and older by providing a range of services, including:

One of my favorite New Year’s resolutions is my commitment to volunteer more, give more, and do more to spread kindness through everyday actions. This year, as I think back on the posts I’ve done about Independent Living options for seniors https://www.activeadultsdelaware.com/blog/posts/2023/11/01/take-a-luxury-cruise-or-move-into-the-lodge-at-truitt-homestead/, I’d like to spotlight one of the best ways to support older folks who want to age in place in the homes they love.

Most of us have had Thanksgiving celebrations that involved hours of shopping, cooking and cleaning for large groups of family and friends. While we might have enjoyed a lot of it, the process is a recipe for exhaustion. And even though most of us like leftovers, we’ve often had to toss out extras after the third day or [...]

As described below, The Lodge at Truitt Homestead https://truittlodge.com/ offers a similar opportunity. It’s located in Rehoboth near King’s Creek and the Rehoboth Beach Country Club. The best way to describe the feeling I get when perusing the Web site is that I’m looking at a brochure for a luxury cruise with fine accommodations, great food, and a wide range of social, recreational and educational activities, all of which are summed up in this fun video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZePM4XcXoB0.

If you’re looking for an Independent Living option https://mooringsatlewes.org/independent-living/, you can enjoy a spacious home with minimal maintenance and access to a wide range of amenities, including a fitness center, dog park, library, performance hall and fine dining at the Boathouse Bistro and the Chart House. The dining option may be especially appealing if you don’t feel like cooking even though you have a full kitchen in your home.

A lot of us spend a lot of time thinking about how we’ll transition from living in our wonderful Delaware single family homes and condos to places that will give us a lot more joy as we age. It’s inevitable, in fact, for that sprawling green lawn to lose some of its appeal when we get tired of pushing the mower . . .

...I was thrilled to hear this because the 55+ demographic is the fastest-growing in Sussex County and fairly robust in Kent and New Castle Counties as well. Many of us go to great lengths to stay healthy by exercising regularly, forming good friendships, and enjoying lot of fresh food raised right here in Delaware. Unfortunately none of us are made of steel, so we’ll never be able to completely avoid falls, injuries or bouts of illness. So having great healthcare close to home is yet another reason to celebrate our Delaware lifestyles.

The post was timely because so many of our clients are retired or semi-retired and yearning for lots of leisure time as opposed to yard-maintenance time. Many want to enjoy active days with less time on our increasingly busy roads. The really great news is that builders are responding in a big way to this demographic, as you can see when you visit the communities spotlighted at our Web site.

All of us at Active Adults enjoy working with our demographic, although the real-life definition of that word is a bit complicated. You might be over 55 and looking for your dream house in a community where someone else does your major yardwork while you enjoy the pool, pickleball court and club house activities. But [...]
