Active Adults Agents Close to Home: Spotlight on Audrey Hammond in Milford

If youre thinking about buying a house in a certain neighborhood, wouldnt it be great to talk with a neighbor first?

Thats the spirit of our new series: Active Adults Agents Close to Home.

Over the next few weeks well profile several who will tell us what they love most about the homes and communities where they live. While we cant be completely sure of what theyll tell us, we expect to hear about their favorite restaurants and leisure spots, proximity to cultural and natural attractions, and architectural aspects that they find especially appealing.

Meet Agent Audrey Hammond

This week we talked with agent Audrey Hammond, whos lived in her ranch-style home in Milford, Delaware for more than 30 years.

Whats unique about your particular home and community?

Milford is one of the more affordable areas, with some houses still selling for under $300,000 even new construction. Most of our communities dont offer community pools and clubhouses but the region itself offers all kinds of attractions.

I have Killens Pond State Park nearby. It has a water park, kayaking and walking trails. Were also close to Abbott's Mill Nature Center.

We also have downtown Milford with the Riverwalk, dog parks and events such as the Ladybug Festival, farmers market, the Winter Festival, art shows, music festivals and more. It even has its own movie theatre Milford Movies 9 with reclining chairs.

What do you do those nights when you dont feel like cooking?

Some of my favorite local restaurants are La Hacienda for authentic Mexican food, My Sisters Fault for empanadas and sweets, BenVenuto for wonderful Italian right downtown on Front Street, Surf and Turf, with great food and atmosphere, and easySpeak Spirits with fun cocktails, small plate food, and an ax throwing room next door. You can also sit outside on nice days and play cornhole.

Milford is near the center of the state but not too far from downstate. Whats so great about that?

The Mispillion River that runs through Milford divides Sussex County to the South and Kent County to the North. It brought us the shipbuilding industry as far back as the 1700s. Downtown Milford also shows off large historic homes, some of which overlook our lakes.

Ive lived here in the same house for over 30 years and love the location so much Ill probably never leave. I feel like Im out in the country but am only 10 minutes to shopping, restaurants and the new Bayhealth Hospital, 30 minutes to the beach, and 30 minutes to Dover.

My advice to anyone who wants to buy in the region is to recognize that youll be in an area with farms, woods and lakes. You wont get stuck in beach traffic, and youll have the peace and quiet of country living.

If Milford sounds like your kind of place, take a look at these terrific communities:
