I’ve had a great time spotlighting several interesting stories in the Cape Gazette’s Spring Home and Garden Guide over the past few weeks. And since a lot of that is about hard work in your yard and meeting with home improvement folks I’m glad to move on to the simple joys of recreation, music and other arts events showcased in the new Spring and Summer Festivals Guide. Here are some highlights happening in the next two weeks.
Day trips to Lewes for restaurants, history, architecture and gardens are always fun, but on Friday, April 24th from 3 to 5 p.m. and Saturday, 25th, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. you can take an extra excursion to the Lewes Public Library for the Beach Reads Book Sale. The prices will be low and the selection will be huge.
You might not have a doodle dog but if you agree with the multitudes that they’re the cutest, head to Rehoboth and Dewey during the weekend from April 24th through 26th for a costume parade on the Rehoboth Boardwalk and a Doodle Romp.
MARYLAND INTERNATIONAL KITE EXPO
That same weekend, April 24th – 26th, Ocean City will host three days of kite flying exhibitions on the beach. This is a fun family event featuring stunt and power kite lessons, displays, demonstrations and the opportunity to fly your own kite.
Reports that wildfowl carving is a lost art are greatly exaggerated . . . as evidenced by the Ward World Championship Wildfowl Carving Competition and Art Festival April 24th – 26th in Ocean City. It happens at the Roland E. Powell Convention Center and features wonderful exhibits and hands-on activities.
That same weekend, and also at the Roland E. Powell Convention Center and at the Crown Sports Center in Fruitland, Maryland, you can experience true athletic audacity at the Beachfest Volleyball Festival.

One of the most important sites for learning about WWII history is at the Fort Miles Museum in Cape Henlopen State Park in Lewes, and on Saturday, April 25th from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. there will be special tours of the museum and all kinds of reenactments featuring military vehicles, artillery demonstrations and more to commemorate the 261st Coast Artillery Battalion’s role in liberating Europe from the Nazis.
If you love fine cuisine on a budget, head down to Ocean City between April 27th and May 11 for a two-week celebration of the area’s finest restaurants, featuring fixed price menus and dining deals. Reservations are recommended.
The first of several car shows around Delmarva this spring will take place from April 30th – May 3 in Ocean City, with 3,000 classic and eccentric vehicles, boardwalk parades, guest appearances, live music, and more.
INTERNATIONAL JAZZ DAY CELEBRATION
On Thursday, April 30th the Mid South Audio Studio at 227 Milton Ellendale Highway in Milton will host the Warren Wolf Trio. Shows are at 6 and 8 p.m. Tickets are $45 and seating is limited.
As we dive into this exciting season of sun and celebration, we are reminded of how truly lucky we are to call this stretch of the coast home. Our local festivals are the heartbeat of our towns, and we are so grateful for the neighbors and organizations that work tirelessly to bring us together. At Active Adults Realty®, we don't just sell homes here; we cherish the community spirit that makes every beach day and boardwalk parade special. We look forward to seeing you out there—be sure to say hello if you spot us at the library sale or the kite expo!
