Life seems to get better if you’re always learning. Taking the time to explore interesting subjects in greater detail. Traveling away from your home and the common destinations around it. Meeting and spending time with people with whom you have a lot in common – and those who are even more interesting because they’re not much like you.
Fortunately, Delaware is home to a fantastic resource for all of this. With locations in Wilmington, Dover, Lewes, and Ocean View, the University of Delaware’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI). Going by its slogan: “Learning and fun for ages 50+,” the Institute offers so many different types of experiences, including:
- Learning for the fun of it, with classes taught by highly qualified pros but without those annoying tests
- Experiences that connect you to new friends and communities of people who share your interests
- Travel opportunities that combine socializing with learning
- Opportunities to channel your expertise as a teacher or volunteer
- Opportunities to stay physically active and mentally sharp
Altogether there are more than 3,000 OLLI members who are taking part in more than 300 classes. When you join you gain free access to the classes, programs and social and travel opportunities. You also get some great University of Delaware privileges, including a UD email account, access to UD libraries, the opportunity to audit two UD courses each year, free Zoom software for online conversations and with OLLI tech support and more.
Another great thing about these courses is that you can experience them in-person, online, in a combination of both online and in-person, and on-demand since many courses are recorded.

From May 19th through 22nd Olli will host UD By-the-Sea at the Atlantic Sands Hotel and Conference Center. The cost for current OLLI members is $250 and guests will pay just $275 for:
- 2 days of educational programs with guest speakers
- Eight educational programming tracks
- An opening reception with entertainment and a cash bar
- A continental breakfast on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday mornings
- Games and social activities
This year’s learning tracks include:
- A session on lighthouses and shipwrecks, focusing primarily on those on Delaware Bay
- A session on coastal Delaware’s ecology and evolution
- Farm visits to learn more about our wonderful farm-to-table cuisine
- Meetings with Lewes artists at their studios
- A close-up view of how environmental circumstances are impacting coastal Sussex County
- A session on International Affairs, geopolitical issues and foreign policy
