ENJOY ACTIVE AND FUN LEISURE TIME AT THE BEACH THIS JUNE
A couple of weeks ago I opened the pages of the Cape Gazette’s Spring and Summer Festivals Guide https://www.capegazette.com/center/festival-season-here/289349 to spotlight some cool happenings in May. Turns out that was just the start, because June is full of fun things to do as well. Here are some highlights:
FABULOUS FOOD
If you love wonderful restaurant experiences and want to support our military servicemembers and first responders, check out all of the great dining options during Coastal Delaware’s Restaurant Week, taking place June 1st through 6th, at www.culinarycoastrestaurantweek.com.
I always love writing about Delaware’s farmers because of all of the wonderful things they bring to our markets and tables and am glad to promote the Strawberry Sip & Shop taking place at the Lewes Fire Station 2 off Janice Road just west of Route 1 on June 7th from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. It’s the place to be for strawberry shortcake, strawberry wine and just plain and awesome fresh strawberries straight from the fields . . . along with lots of cool strawberry-themed crafts. Indulge your love of beautiful historic buildings and seaside décor at the Mid-Atlantic Sea Glass and Coastal Arts Festival on June 7th and 8th from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the grounds of the Lewes Historical Society. You’ll find all kinds of jewelry and decorative arts fashioned from colorful sea glass along with educational exhibits displayed in a lovely setting in downtown Lewes, where you’ll have lots of lunch options as well. ANTIQUE CARS
“Come for the Cars; Stay for the Fun!” is the slogan for the 68th Old Timer’s Day Classic Car Show & Family Festival on June 14th in Selbyville. GARDENS
Historic Lewes is wonderful every day, but especially inspiring during the annual Lewes Garden Tour, taking place this year on June 21st. It’s a self-guided tour so you can do it at your own pace and revel in public spaces, including Zwaanendael Park, where vendors will sell gardening-related items, and visit beautiful home gardens as well. Vendors will offer lunch items and cold beverages for sale, and you can also duck into many downtown restaurants as well. Get the details at www.leweschamber.com.
MUSIC
Spend a day in the Delaware countryside at the June Jam Music Festival on June 21st. This outdoor concert will be held at G & R Campground and will benefit lots of great causes. NOTE: the line of up performers is still developing, so visit the event Web site at www.junejam.com close to the date for details.
JUNETEENTH!
Juneteenth celebrations commemorate the ending of slavery in the U.S. take place around the country and are especially powerful to locals when they honor Delaware’s rich African American history. This year’s family-focused Juneteenth Freedom Day event will be held at George H.P. Smith Park in Lewes and will feature live music, history lessons, spoken word performances and food trucks. If it rains the event will be held at Cape Henlopen High School. Learn more at www.leweschamber.com.
