Reinventing Retirement
Hi, this is Kathy Sperl-Bell of Active Adults Realty in Delaware and for 2020 I thought it would be fun to have some conversations about retirement. Talk to some friends and talk to some clients to answer the question, what does retirement mean today? For many baby boomers, it means different things. I've noticed with many of our clients over the past few years, it could mean pursuing the arts to others. To others, it might mean more opportunities to volunteer and for few, it might mean a full-blown second career. But with a pension perhaps some of you have the opportunity to do something you've always wanted to do for the very first time.
Well, what about those of us that don't have a pension? What if you're someone like me? I had some great opportunities. I had some great jobs in both the travel business and the computer industry. But I never had that experience of 20 or 30 years with one company and therefore, I have no pension. But in my fifties, I was fortunate enough to find real estate and what a good fit for somebody that's entrepreneurial and 24/7. It's different every day and I love it.
Then, about 10 years ago, my husband Bill and I had an opportunity to open our own independent real estate brokerage, Active Adults Realty. Today, we've grown to have 17 agents. We now have a really great full-time operations manager and an excellent sales manager. Now, we don't necessarily have to be on duty 24/7. Then last October, I turned 72 and everyone wanted to know, "Kath, when are you going to retire?" I said, I'm a business owner, probably never. But with this opportunity to take a little bit more time off, we're doing a lot of travel. We're playing more pickleball. I'm doing more yoga classes, which is very good for me and we're loving every minute of it. Throughout 2020, I hope to have more conversations perhaps with you about retirement. What I'll want to know is how are you reinventing retirement?
