When Active Adults Downsize Their Home

Many Boomers relocating to Delaware are downsizing from much larger homes to something more manageable

Does downsizing and moving to a smaller home feel daunting? Lets chat about some living alternatives for when you feel your current home is no longer meeting your needs and lifestyle. Boomer Buyers looking to settle in Delaware love working with our agents because they are familiar with the different housing options from active adult communities to age-restricted communities to alternative living situations and aging in place design concepts.

Recently our own Debbie Shearer, who is both an Accredited Buyer Representative (ABR) and a Seniors Real Estate Specialist (SRES), was interviewed by Where to Retire Magazine and asked to contribute to their article, "Condo Living: Getting Close to Your Neighbors". A common reflection on moving as youre aging is the desire to live close enough to others so if you need help from neighbors or friends that help is nearby. Condo style living makes that possible.

Condo Perks

Numerous homeowners are happy to pay a Condo fee monthly to have their lawncare tended or to have no exterior maintenance worries. When asked why people look to live in a condo in their retirement years, Shearer says One of the biggest benefits to this style of living is all the concierge services and opportunities which come with condo living such as a pool, a gym, or an activities center. You can be freed from the everyday chores of a home plus have the freedom to lock and go with no worries if you enjoy traveling. In fact, travelling is one of the reasons I hear most from clients looking to make the change. Having close neighbors puts a homeowner at ease knowing a neighbor can keep an eye on the place when they are away for a week. Neighbors watch out for one another and form friendships while enjoying the activities around the community.

Looking at Downsizing

Parting with possessions when you move to a smaller home isnt always easy. What to take? What to donate? Since storage space will be limited most will decide which pieces to take in the move and which to move to storage or get rid of. But afterwards many will say having less stuff has been a liberating experience! I wrote a blog post about using a Move Manager when you decide to downsize, click here to read those tips.

How Much Space is Enough?

When transitioning to a smaller home its important to rightsize. Going from 3,000 square feet to 1,000 square feet could be quite an adjustment. Discuss your needs and plans with your REALTOR to get some recommendations.

A multi-family dwelling may not be your first move as a retiree. Many Boomers still enjoy living in a single-family home and later decide to relocate to a condo or an apartment as their primary residence. At Active Adults Realty in Delaware weve noticed that single retirees or those looking for a second home are most likely to consider condo living initially.

Whether it involves selling your existing home or just finding the next one, Active Adults Realty will be working with you as a successful team through your settlement. When youre ready, were here to make the transition a smooth one. Schedule an appointment today.
