Is It Too Early To Plan For My Retirement? | Ask The Broker

When is the right time to plan for retirement? It's never too early to start planning for your future!

Planning for your future is essential to ensuring a happy existence in your home for retirement.

Is it too early to begin planning for retirement?

Hi, it's Kathy Sperl-Bell at Active Adults Realty in Delaware. I'm a planner, I don't think it's ever too early to begin planning for your future, but let's talk about planning and what the planning should encompass. Planning certainly can start online doing some internet research, it should include some visits to areas that you are considering. Talking with friends, talking with your family, communicating with each other. Making sure you are both on the same page, that you're both looking forward to the same things. Do you agree on budget?

And then, it's really important to get in touch with a local expert, somebody who's going to be on your side, someone who's going to be able to counsel you and help you evaluate the choices. Making a really, really good decision. Just the other day I was talking to someone going through this exact same process, and he had been doing extensive internet research, and found some good communities, found some good information, made a few trips to Delaware. Even visited a couple of the communities. But it got to a point where he realized, as he said, "You just don't know what you don't know."

Luckily he got in touch with us, and we had a really good conversation. I was able to help him with a lot of questions about property taxes, about income tax, about utility costs. Where flood insurance might apply, the different closing costs and fees, and just the whole process of relocating. Because, no matter how much research you do online, do you know how to filter that? Do you know if it's comprehensive? You know, do you really understand what you're finding? Sometimes you just need to put that mouse aside and put yourself in the hands of a local expert.

We've talked a lot in the past in previous articles, previous videos, about this whole process. But, in this particular series we're going to focus on the planning, the how to deal with information overload, who to believe. Is it fake news or is it valid information? When to buy, writing the contract, and is it risky to do a contract on an extended delivery home? So, these are the topics that we're going to be covering over this next series. I hope you'll stay with us, and as always if you have any specific questions pick up the phone and give me a call, or send an email to
