How Delaware Boomers make it work
Boomers and their parents are living longer and not everyone can or wants to live in a Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC) or go into a Nursing Home. But the caregivers, often the adult childrenBaby Boomers now getting ready to retireneed some help.
Help can include Adult Day Care and other assistance for caregivers at one of the Senior Centers sprinkled throughout all of Delaware or the CHEER Activity Centers located in Sussex County. Not all these senior centers have websites, but this link to DHSS provides an overview of organizations and the type of care they can provide.
Bring your aging parents with you to Delaware
Another growing trend is the Village concept. Just Google village projects for seniors and you will find a host of articles, projects and organizations that are designed to help seniors stay in their homes, or perhaps in your home.
One of the village projects that has gained traction in Delaware is the Brandywine Village network, created by Jewish Family Services of Delaware. With locations based in both New Castle County and now in Millsboro, Delaware.
Another is the Greater Lewes Community Village, a member of the VILLAGE TO VILLAGE Network of over 200 VILLAGES nationwide. The concept is Volunteers Helping Neighbors Live Independently and it is working. Your aging parents may be healthy but need assistance with transportation. If they are living with you, it is best for you and them if they get out to social and educational events in the community. Your family can become members and volunteers at the same time. Thats what makes a VILLAGE.
