How Delaware Boomers Care For Aging Parents

Boomers and their parents are living longer. Delaware has much to offer those caring for aging parents and wanting to retire to this state.

Are you ready to retire but youre still caring for aging parents? We hear this from many of our Baby Boomer clients. So many of us are caring for one or more parent and hesitate to move to our desired retirement home while our parents still need our help.

What are your choices in Delaware?

How long do you put off moving if that was part of your own retirement plan and what are your choices if you move to Delaware?

I wrote about this back April 2010 in the post, Boomers Living Longer In Coastal Delaware. The choices we identified then are still available but new options providing alternatives have begun to appear. In-home medical and non-medical assistance is available from organizations like:

How Delaware Boomers make it work

Boomers and their parents are living longer and not everyone can or wants to live in a Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC) or go into a Nursing Home. But the caregivers, often the adult childrenBaby Boomers now getting ready to retireneed some help.

Help can include Adult Day Care and other assistance for caregivers at one of the Senior Centers sprinkled throughout all of Delaware or the CHEER Activity Centers located in Sussex County. Not all these senior centers have websites, but this link to DHSS provides an overview of organizations and the type of care they can provide.

Bring your aging parents with you to Delaware

Another growing trend is the Village concept. Just Google village projects for seniors and you will find a host of articles, projects and organizations that are designed to help seniors stay in their homes, or perhaps in your home.

One of the village projects that has gained traction in Delaware is the Brandywine Village network, created by Jewish Family Services of Delaware. With locations based in both New Castle County and now in Millsboro, Delaware.

Another is the Greater Lewes Community Village, a member of the VILLAGE TO VILLAGE Network of over 200 VILLAGES nationwide. The concept is Volunteers Helping Neighbors Live Independently and it is working. Your aging parents may be healthy but need assistance with transportation. If they are living with you, it is best for you and them if they get out to social and educational events in the community. Your family can become members and volunteers at the same time. Thats what makes a VILLAGE.
