Delaware was the first state to ratify the constitution forging the foundation for more historical points to follow. The state has a vast array of extras some may overlook but ask a Delawarean to name one special thing about their state and Im guessing at least a few of the following will be shared.
1) A Coastal State Full of Rich History
Several notable historical highlights include:
- In 1682, William Penn arrived by boat to New Castle and later went on to become governor.
- Tradition holds that the first time Betsy Ross's famous flag was flown was at the Battle of Cooch's Bridgelocated on Route 4 in Newark.
- George Read was a resident of Dover when he signed the Declaration of Independence and Caesar Rodney signed it while living in Kent County.
- In 1807, the town of Milton was named after the English poet John Milton.
- In 1831 the nation's first scheduled steam railroad began in New Castle.
- Today nearly 500 descendants of the original Nanticoke Indians reside in Delaware; celebrating their heritage each September with the Nanticoke Indian Pow Wow.
2) Fresh Seafood in Abundance
With the proximity of the bays and the Atlantic Ocean, some of best oysters, crabs, and striped bass in the country can be found on dinner plates across the state. Coastal Delaware is a haven for good seafood so come let your taste buds indulge.
3) Unique Vintage License Plates
Delaware state loves their license plates, especially the vintage black-and-white low number plates. These enamel tags are often transferred from generation to generation and are highly collectible. A low-digit plate can sell for hundreds of thousands. Even though in 1958 the state changed the colors to gold on blue vehicle owners are permitted to display original or authorized replicas in the traditional black-and-white porcelain.
4) Beautiful Beaches
New Castle County residents make the trek to the coast in under two hours. Kent County residents can be surfside in less than an hour. Thats a lot of reasons to declare any day a beach day.
5) Home to Monster Mash & NASCAR
The Dover International Speedway is home of one of NASCARs top stock car racing circuits plus where the Monster Mash Marathon and Half-Marathon take place. Runners make the 1-mile loop around the speedway before heading out towards the historic district in the City of Dover.
6) Festivals, Activities & Attractions Galore
So many things to do and see around this state for all types of interests and ages. If youre near the Wilmington area plan to visit the Delaware Shakespearean Festival or Point-to-Point Winterthur. And dont forget the May Strawberry Festival in Camden-Wyoming, the October Apple Scrapple Festival in Bridgeville, or the fall Delaware Wine and Beer Festival in Kent County. Dont miss touring mansion and gardens of Nemours or the mills, museum and grounds of Hagley.
