Spend the Day, or the Weekend, in Beautiful Berlin

One of the best things about living in Delaware is the wide array of scenic road trip destinations within an easy drive. Today I'm writing a fresh post about a favorite among folks in Sussex and Kent Counties: historic Berlin, Maryland.

Named in October as one of the 25 Official Hallmark Christmas Towns in the U.S., this lovely place is in Worcester County, Maryland, just a short drive past the Delaware/Maryland line. Its centerpiece is a gorgeous and historic downtown with more than 60 boutiques, art galleries, antique stores, and restaurants along its brick-lined sidewalks.

You can find a directory of shops here, although part of the fun in a leisurely visit is window-shopping as you stroll through town. The restaurants are amazing, with many offering menus built on our region's proximity to farm-fresh produce, meats, and local seafood.

STAY THE NIGHT

If you're looking for a romantic getaway, consider spending the night at The Atlantic Hotel, which offers lovely Victorian-era decor, deluxe lodging, and wonderful cuisine and wines at its Bistro. Other lodging includes the Holland House Bed and Breakfast and The Inn Berlin Bed and Breakfast.

Among the more than two dozen additional restaurants are coffee shops, an old-time soda fountain, craft-beer-focused eateries, wine bars, and pubs. Many also feature live music.

BRING THE GRANDKIDS

If your grandkids are visiting, there are all kinds of activities for the whole family. Youngsters with vivid imaginations will love The Mermaid Museum, where you can explore the legends and mysteries of these fascinating creatures. The World of Toys is another fun spot for playful learning, and Dolle's Candyland is a great reward for good behavior after a healthy lunch or dinner.

ICE ICE BERLIN AND THE TREE LIGHTING

Fall is an especially beautiful time to visit, because colorful trees dot downtown as well as the highways and byways that lead you there. And if you love the winter holiday season, you'll have a very special visit on Friday, November 27 (the day after Thanksgiving) at Ice Ice Berlin & Tree Lighting. From 5 to 8 p.m., downtown will feature ice sculptures, music, family activities, and festive decor, and at 6 p.m., the town's Christmas tree will be lit with great fanfare.
