Delaware has always been proud of its history. As the first state to ratify the Constitution in 1787, we’ve often led the way for the nation. Today, we are leading once again—but this time, it’s in the realm of healthcare infrastructure and medical education.
Currently, Delaware is the 5th oldest state in the country. In Sussex County alone, roughly 1 in 4 residents are over the age of 60. To meet the needs of this growing population, Delaware’s major health systems are currently invested in over one billion dollars of construction and expansion projects.
WATCH: Delaware’s $1 Billion Healthcare Update

In this 5-minute update, we break down the newest facilities opening across the First State and what the 2026 legislative session means for your medical costs.
1. ChristianaCare: A Multi-County Strategy
As Delaware’s largest healthcare provider, ChristianaCare is executing an $865 million investment strategy to ensure care is accessible from the Pennsylvania line down to the Maryland border.
-
Georgetown Health Campus: This $65 million project on Route 13 is the new heartbeat of central Sussex. It features a "neighborhood hospital" model with 24/7 emergency services and specialized oncology care.
-
Expansion in Newark: Approval was recently finalized for a $75 million inpatient rehabilitation hospital, which will free up critical acute-care space at Wilmington and Christiana Hospitals.
2. Bayhealth: Leading in Heart and Vascular Care
Bayhealth is focusing on high-tech specialization and increasing capacity at its central hubs.
-
Dover’s Vertical Expansion: The Kent Campus is undergoing a $250 million expansion, adding six stories to provide 100 new inpatient beds.
-
The Heart & Vascular Institute: Opened in March 2026, this Dover facility unifies all cardiovascular diagnostics and treatments under one roof, making it a regional powerhouse for cardiac care.
3. The Millsboro Boom: Beebe & TidalHealth
Millsboro is the fastest-growing healthcare "hot spot" in the state.
-
Beebe Healthcare: Their new campus features a Hybrid Emergency Department, designed specifically to handle both adult emergencies and pediatric cases in partnership with Nemours.
-
TidalHealth: The Millsboro North Campus, set to fully open its doors later this year, is a $100 million complex bringing orthopedics and thoracic surgery directly to Sussex residents.
4. Training Our Own: The Delaware Collaborative Clinical Campus
Perhaps the most significant news of 2026 isn't a building, but a partnership. In February, ChristianaCare, Bayhealth, and PCOM announced the launch of the Delaware Collaborative Clinical Campus.
Starting in July 2026, medical students will complete their full clinical rotations in Kent and Sussex Counties. This is a game-changer for our workforce; research shows that physicians are far more likely to open a permanent practice in the communities where they trained.
Policy Shifts: Senate Bill 1 and House Bill 318
In Dover, our lawmakers are currently debating two major pieces of legislation that will impact your wallet:
-
Senate Bill 1: Advanced in March 2026, this bill seeks to cap hospital prices and mandate that insurance companies invest more in Primary Care.
-
House Bill 318: This bill aims to reform the "Certificate of Public Review" process, allowing hospitals to expand beds and services faster based on community demand rather than bureaucratic red tape.
