EXERCISE CAN BEAT BACK PARKINSON'S AND BOOST YOUR MOOD

Many Active Adults clients are moving to Delaware because there are so many outdoor recreational opportunities on our beaches and our many state parks, and several well-established communities with aquatic centers, walking and biking trails, tennis and pickleball courts, and clubhouses that foster social gatherings.

Unfortunately, some of us are facing physical challenges that stem from the progression of Parkinson’s Disease. It’s a neurodegenerative disorder that affects the brain cells that produce dopamine and can lead to tremors, muscle rigidity, and balance problems. Fortunately, as reported by the Parkinson’s Foundation, carefully-crafted exercise programs can significantly lessen symptoms, improve well-being, and slow the progression of the disease.

Some of the most common components of these programs are aerobic activity, strength training, stretching, and balance exercises, and classes are typically distinguished by three key approaches.

  • Rock Steady Boxing, incorporating aerobically intense, contact-free boxing moves to enhance strength and rhythm;
  • Pedaling for Parkinson’s, a cycling program that can significantly reduce symptoms; and,
  • LSVT BIG, which uses large, exaggerated movements to improve balance, walking speed, and the ability to complete daily activities.

There are many gyms throughout Delaware that have Parkinson’s programs led by specially qualified staff. So if you’ve been diagnosed or know someone who may be dealing with the condition, you should check in with health clubs in your area to see if you can sign up for a class.

In the meantime, here’s a list of gyms that are likely to have Parkinson’s programs:

IN SUSSEX COUNTY

RISE Fitness + Adventure in Rehoboth is a big and airy gym with a wide range of cardio and strength training opportunities, and one of the state’s most popular Parkinson’s programs. Members can choose from a variety of classes suited to different conditions and experiences. Learn more here.

Aquacare Physical Therapy in Lewes and Millville also offers Parkinson’s programs led by highly credentialed medical and fitness professionals. Learn more here.

IN KENT COUNTY

Forever Fit in Dover offers Rock Steady Boxing classes to improve balance, hand-eye coordination, agility, rhythm, and mental focus. Learn more here.

IN NEW CASTLE COUNTY

- In Wilmington, Neuro Fitness Therapy also offers Rock Steady Boxing group classes. Learn more by clicking here.

TWO SPECIAL NOTES:

The fact that Parkinson’s impacts dopamine-producing cells has a lot to do with why these programs work. Aerobic activities that quicken our heartbeats and improve our oxygen intake and stretching and other movements can significantly boost our moods and our ability to focus, which is why people who participate in these programs often come out feeling much more optimistic as they finish their classes.

I also want to note that the YMCA centers in Dover and Middletown have in the past offered Pedaling for Parkinson’s classes, using stationary bike regimens to improve motor function, foster neurological benefits and dopamine production, and cognitive and mental health. Contact the Dover Y HERE and the Middletown Y HERE to learn about potential classes in the coming months.
