Lewes and Rehoboth Beach named prime destinations for retirement
Well, folks, the secret is officially out. The first town in the first state and its neighbor to the south have now been revealed in the most dramatic way among the greatest places in the nation to retire.
Thats the verdict from Parade magazine, which made its announcement in connection with an article urging boomers to make a Happy Plan for their great escape from the workforce and cited Lewes and Rehoboth Beach as prime destinations for boomers aiming to get everything they want from that plan.
Factors that make Coastal Delaware desirable
The magazine made this decision after consulting retirement experts who cited the following factors as being most important to people whove said goodbye to workday commutes:
- Money Is the community affordable, with reasonable taxes, enabling your savings to last throughout your retirement?
- Health Does the community have medical facilities and other resources that will keep you in tip-top condition?
- Relationships Are there nearby places, events, or opportunities for spouses or single retirees to make friends and have fun?
The fact that Lewes and Rehoboth made the list isnt surprising to many of us whove been here for a while. As noted in the story, many newcomers are East Coasters who find bliss in the Sussex County sand, charm, parks and low-key lifestyle. They also appreciate our tax friendliness since our property taxes are so low and because the state doesnt tax our Social Security earnings.
For those reasons and more, Lewes landed at number four on the list.
Further resources
The writers backed up their ranking with some interesting data from a United Van Lines study that showed Montana and Delaware in a tie for the states with the most inbound moves by retirees.
The story also reinforces this Realtor.com feature, which took a look at which beach towns are the most appealing for our golden years. As noted by Danielle Hale, chief economist for realtor.com, Retirees look for affordable communities where they can fill their time with purposeful activities and social connections, which are keys to a long, healthy life.
