What Are My Healthcare Options in Delaware?

Discovering what healthcare options in Delaware are available, is an important factor to consider for those relocating at retirement.

Healthcare is an extremely important topic, especially to those that are approaching retirement. When deciding on where you want to retire, knowing what nearby hospitals and healthcare facilities that are available to you is an important factor. Kathy discusses this and the exciting news of hospital expansions and new facilities coming to Delaware in the coming years.

Today's question, "What can you tell me about health care in Delaware?"

As you can imagine, this is a question we get very often. Anybody who is thinking of relocating, especially at retirement age, is going to be concerned with health care options. So I wanted to give you a brief update on a couple of exciting things that are going on.

Number one, there's a brand new hospital being built in Milford, which is right on the line between Kent County and Sussex County and it's going to open in 2019. That's coming up real fast. When you see it taking shape you understand what a game changer this is going to be. It's a vision for the next 100 years. It will be 440,000 square feet of hospital and outpatient center. All private patient rooms. I like that. They are making huge investments, over 300 million dollar investment in communities down here in Southern Delaware. They're bringing new jobs, they're really expanding the services that we need. So that's Bay Health in Milford serving both Kent County and Sussex County.

Not to be outdone, Beebe Hospital which is headquartered right here in Lewes, is also expanding. Last year they approved 180 million dollar expansion that will upgrade both the hospital campus here in Lewes and a specialty service center in Rehobeth Beach. Those services are going to start hitting this year in 2018.

On top of that expansion in Lewes and Rehobeth, Beebe is planning a multi-million dollar expansion in Millville, Delaware. And that has really been much needed. They're breaking ground on property later in 2018 and by 2020, Southern Sussex patients will not have to travel for either critical emergency care or oncology services. So that's been a big concern of people that have wanted to locate in Bethany, Ocean View, Millville, Selbyville, those areas. So this expansion is really much needed.

And on top of these expansions, we have Christiana Hospital in Northern Delaware, which you know, Delaware's a small state, so it's only an hour and a half at most. Christiana Hospital is Delaware's only Level One trauma center. It's verified by the American College of Surgeons and it is, in fact, the only Level One trauma center on the East Coast corridor between Baltimore and Philadelphia. So that's important. It is and will continue to be a world-class hospital.
