Kenny's Garage in Milton, DE

Have you been to Kennys Garage on Rt. 16, east of Rt. 5? Aside from being a great mechanic, Kenneth Hughes is a collector of 50s memorabilia and hot rods.

The pink counter stools and lunch counter behind the car hop were rescued from a restaurant that once stood on the now-vacant lot across the street from the Milton Library, where the weekly farmers market is held. The restaurant was known as The Pit, and took its name from the lube pit of the service station that preceded the restaurant. The pit was boarded over, of course, when the restaurant began business.

The gas pump visible in the hot rod photo was manufactured in Salisbury, MD by the Martin & Schwartz Company, in the early 1950s. There is a thriving collectors market for these and other vintage gas pumps, according to what I see on line. Kenny in fact has another Martin & Schwartz gas pump, not visible in the photos, and is now in the process of acquiring a third.
