Featured Boomer - Meet Jean McMillan Bowers

Jean retired as a librarian and library manager in 2009 and relocated from the Virginia and Washington, D.C. area to Sussex County Delaware. Jean was drawn to Delaware by the small town atmosphere and the natural beauty found in the ocean, the countryside, and the woods. Many of her paintings depict the beauty found in local scenes.

Jean is continuing her art studies begun in the early 1980s when she was a BFA student. Since retiring Jean has renewed her interest in art and has begun to practice and study extensively.

Jean is a member of the Rehoboth Art League, Cape Artists of Lewes, the Mispillion Art League, the Milton Art Guild, the Worcester County Council for the Arts, and Delaware By Hand. Jean exhibits her work regularly. Her painting of the Blue Ridge Mountains was on exhibit at the Biggs Museum of American Art.

I asked Jean if she missed anything about her life in Washington, DC. We miss nothing about Washington, she replied.

Was there an adjustment period when you retired, I wondered.

Mike and I retired on April 30, 2009, 2 days after I turned 60 yrs. There was no adjustment except for me, 6 months to "de-stress" after a government executive job that left me exhausted. I sat on my lovely patio, looking out at the woods, watching the deer and birds, and doing sudoku! ... and thinking about getting back into art which I tried in the 80s when I was on an extended maternity leave.

What do you like best about living in Delaware?

We LOVE Delaware with such friendly, low key people who also love living here. I have made so very many friends, especially in the art world, and I have leaped into this big time - not everyone would do as I have. Some have become involved in the 'Farmers' Market', the garden club, the library's 'Friends of the Library and other local organizations when they retire.
