The Nation's Summer Capital!
Rehoboth Beach was founded in 1872 by The Rehoboth Beach Camp Meeting Association of the Methodist Episcopal Church. It wasn’t until 1893 that the town was named Rehoboth and 1903 before a Mayor was elected. Today Rehoboth Beach, located on the Atlantic Coast only two hours from Washington, D.C., Baltimore, and Philadelphia, is known as the Nation’s Summer Capital.
I first discovered Rehoboth Beach while I was living in Washington, D.C. It was the place for weekend getaways during the summer season and I became a beach house member. On Fridays I’d make every effort to escape the Beltway and make it over the Bay Bridge before the crowds. When it was time to escape for good, I moved to Wilmington, Delaware, to be close to Rehoboth. By then, the Summer Capital had become a year round haven for vacationing and retiring Boomers. In 2003, Bill and I moved to Milton, Delaware, only 15 minutes from Rehoboth Beach.

Rehoboth has a beautiful beach, a mile-long boardwalk that is one of the best on the east coast, wonderful unique shops (and outlet stores!), galleries, and a lot of great restaurants. Some of the best events take place in the autumn, like my favorite Autumn Rehoboth Jazz Festival, but there’s something for everyone happening all year long. Events include the annual Chocolate Festival, the Lewes-Rehoboth Today Home Show, parades, sidewalk sales, a Sandcastle contest, Fourth of July Fireworks on the beach, antique shows, the popular Seawitch Festival, events at the Rehoboth Beach Bandstand, and much more. Stay active in Rehoboth, too! Ride your bike, walk Rehoboth’s Avenue, boardwalk, pretty tree lined neighborhoods, or the Junction and Breakwater Trail, and visit Dewey Beach just south of Rehoboth to enjoy water sports on Rehoboth Bay. There are also many active clubs and civic organizations in town.
Check our blog for updates on the Jazz Festival, the Film Festival and all the other year-round activities that make Coastal Delaware the choice for Boomers in the Mid-Atlantic Region.
