Beautiful and quaint, the seafaring town of Lewes (pronounced Loo-is) was founded in 1631. Tree lined, walkable streets feature unique shops and restaurants, galleries, antique stores, B&B’s, incredible gardens, parks, a marina, museums, and a Town Dock on the Lewes-Rehoboth Canal. You’ll also find bay beaches and, in Cape Henlopen State Park where the bay and ocean meet at the tip of the Cape, expanses of ocean beach.
Lewes’s Historic District is full of fine examples of Queen Anne, Second Empire, Early Republic, Mid 19th Century Revival, and Colonial architecture, and Lewes Beach neighborhoods are lined with everything from charming classic beach cottages to gorgeous modern homes. Recreational opportunities in and around Lewes are virtually limitless and include boating, fishing, hiking, kayaking, geocaching, biking, birding and lots more. Lewes is a town with something for everyone!
Residents and visitors alike enjoy year round cultural activities, celebrations, and festivals, many of which are long held traditions in town, including the Doo-dah Parade, Boast the Coast, an old fashioned Fourth of July celebration and Boat Parade, Coast Day, Seafaring Days, First Thursdays, summer concerts, fishing tournaments, Home, Garden, and Artist’s Studio tours, a kite festival, Christmas Parade, and a popular Antiques Show to name but a few. The Historic Lewes Farmers Market, a community-based, producer-only market open May through October, has become an extraordinarily popular destination for shoppers since its opening in 2006.
