Fenwick Island

Incorporated in 1953, Fenwick Island is right across the Delaware state line from “the Nation’s Summer Capital,” Ocean City, Maryland. Close to the OC action, yet family-oriented, the town sits on a narrow strip of land with wide beaches to the east and Little Assawoman Bay to the west. Local legend has it that on Cedar Island in Little Assawoman Bay pirates buried treasure. And the local landmark, the Fenwick Lighthouse (circa 1859) remains with the memories of many mariners and the dangerous offshore shoals.

Fenwick Island’s neighbors north, Bethany Beach and South Bethany, are known as "The Quiet Resorts,” in contradiction to the party atmosphere available up the coast Dewey Beach and the trendy diverse environment in Rehoboth Beach.

Tax-free shops and over a dozen restaurants line a mile of Ocean Highway between the Fenwick Island State Park and Ocean City. The town features a small park, shuffleboard courts, children’s play area, a basketball court and relaxing benches. A public kayak launch with access to the bay is progress. The Town sponsors a few annual events… including a Memorial Day service and Christmas Tree Lighting. Life in Fenwick Island… 40.6% of the town’s population is 45 to 64 years old, and 39.5% are 65 years of age or older, with the median age of residents at 61.
