The County Seat of Sussex County, Delaware
Georgetown is located at the heart of Sussex County, just west of Delaware's award winning beaches like Rehoboth and Dewey Beach and 16 miles from anywhere in Sussex County. Georgetown has small town charm, historic appeal, cultural diversity and excellent educational facilities (Delaware Technical & Community College, Delaware Technical and Community College-Owens), an accessible airport with charter services, unique stores and antique shops.
Georgetown's history dates to two petitions signed by 979 inhabitants of Sussex County that was presented to the General Assembly asking that the county seat be removed from Lewes, and be more centrally located. On October 26, 1791, moved the Seat of Justice to the new County Seat and named it Georgetown in honor of Commissioner George Mitchell. The town's center, aka "The Circle," is listed in the National Historic Record and centers around the red brick Greek revival courthouse built in 1839, with its original whipping post still in place. Georgetown is also the home of the Return Day celebration. Every two years, The Circle is the center of Return Day activities, celebrated on the Thursday after the General Election in November. Festivities include a parade, the reading of election results from the Courthouse tower, and the candidates' ceremonial, "burying of the hatchet."
The Possum Point Players, based in Georgetown, is also quite popular throughout Sussex County. Active civic organizations in Georgetown include The AAUW, American Legion, Masons, Georgetown Historical Society, Kiwanis, Lions, Rotary, and more.
